What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of altered awareness that is often achieved through heightened relaxation. Being in an hypnotic trance can feel very relaxing both physically and mentally.
Hypnosis is an entirely natural state. There is nothing mystical or magical about hypnosis. In fact, everyone experiences a hypnotic state at least twice a day (the hypnagogic state is entered into just before falling asleep and the hypnopompic state just before waking).
Many of us experience a hypnotic state when we are so focused on our thoughts, a film or a piece of music that we lose awareness of our surroundings. But if something requires our attention (the phone rings, for example) we easily shift our focus to the task at hand.
The experience of hypnotherapy and hypno-psychotherapy is similar. When in a hypnotic state you will be aware of what is happening and remain in control – it is not possible to be made to do something you do not want to.
Is hypnotherapy / hypno-psychotherapy safe?
Because hypnosis is an entirely natural state, it is safe and without side effects. Because hypnosis is an entirely natural state, it is safe to use in conjunction with Assisted Reproductive Techniques (such as IUI, IVF or ICSI).
However, certain conditions (for example psychotic conditions including schizophrenia) are contraindicated for hypnotherapy. Other conditions require particular care (for example some breathing techniques are inappropriate for people with certain heart conditions and so safe and alternative methods would be used).
To ensure your safety, you are asked to provide information about your medical history before beginning treatment. Where appropriate (and with your written consent) I may also consult with your GP or other health care practitioner or request their approval before commencing treatment.
Can you guarantee that I will become pregnant?
No. We will work together to mobilise your inner resources to promote your emotional and physical health and achieve your optimal fertile state. This means you have the very best chance of conceiving, but it is not a guarantee of pregnancy. Many people find a restored trust in their body, increased confidence and higher self-esteem. All of these things build one’s ability to face whatever their future outcome might be.
How many sessions do I need?
This is difficult to answer because everyone’s situation and goals for therapy are different. Furthermore, hypnotherapy and hypno-psychotherapy is not something done ‘to’ you, it involves your full engagement with the process to achieve results. However, hypnosis combined with psychotherapy often delivers desired results more rapidly than other psychotherapeutic modalities. Sometimes the realisation of goals can happen more quickly than either the therapist or the client might expect. A single session can be all that is required to bring new insight or set in motion the necessary motivation to achieve goals.
However, in general terms, I recommend that clients assume that they will need between 4 and 6 sessions. For that reason, I offer the opportunity to benefit from a reduced rate 4-session or 6-session fertility package. I also have a 4-session package designed to support the stages and procedures of IVF and other Assisted Reproductive Techniques.
It is my aim to support you to achieve your therapeutic goal as quickly as possible. I have a solution-focused approach and will always work to your agreed personal priorities and your available time and budget.
